PHOTOS: Miss Criminal 2015 Beauty Contest held in Brazil

The annual Miss Criminal 2015 beauty pageant was held at the Talavera Bruce women’s prison in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

  • The Miss Talavera Bruce pageant is one of those beauty contests, which is held under the supervision of armed security guards at watchtowers and all the participants are inmates.

  • That’s because Talavera Bruce is one of the toughest’s prison for women in the world.


Inmate contestants walk towards the stage in a catwalk-style line donning loose, summery dresses, flip flops and sandles

  • The contestants tried on their best dresses, did their makeup and style hair and even perform catwalk poses in the Miss World-style contest.


Some of the women show off their curves, with a side-pose and their hands on their hips, while a prison guards looks on from the watchtower

  • The annual event, which is supported by local community and church groups, was established to boost the inmates’ self-esteem.

  • During the competition the most serious female offenders were trying to impress 10 judges including a famous Brazilian model and prison officials with their beauty and talents.

  • And this year it was 27-year-old Michelle Neri Rangel, who was crowned Miss Talavera Bruce.


Emotional scenes during the contest

  • Michelle Neri Rangel was sentenced to 39 years for robbery in 2010, with an additional six years for prostitution inside the prison.


It was all smiles at the maximum security prison for women as one of the contestants grabs the spotlight in front of the stage

  • Last year’s winner, 22-year-old Ana Carolina Rosa de Souza, who was convicted of drug trafficking, explained: “The competition is not just about beauty. The judges are looking for the ability to express sympathy.
